I love to kick off my mornings with a smoothie that is dense with nutrients and invigorates my body and mind. In the smoothies that I mix up, I often use kale, a green that I believe provides vitamins A, C, and K as well as an impressive library of nutrients.

I know of no other green that packs in quite as many. I toss in a handful of spinach, which, as greens go, is loaded with iron and fiber.

I always add fresh lemon juice to my smoothie; the amount of vitamin C in that little fruit is mind-boggling, and its detoxifying properties are almost too good to be true. Another of my possible add-ins is ginger.

I find that its digestive benefits, combined with a nice kick and some anti-inflammatory properties, take my smoothie to an entirely new level. Chia seeds are another of my possible add-ins, but not always; with or without them, my biomedical boost of a breakfast is satisfying, cleansing, and energizing.

12. Lemon Detox Smoothie

12. Lemon Detox Smoothie

When I prepare a smoothie that blends the juice of a lemon with apple cider vinegar, I think of a cleanse. This drink is not for the faint of heart; it has quite the kick.

Fresh ginger and lots of spinach give this an upbeat, reviving flavor. I also tend to add a little raw honey, just to take the edge off and make it a tiny bit more palatable.

Ingredients

1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon of honey (or maple syrup for a vegan option)
1 small cucumber, peeled and chopped

1 handful of fresh spinach
1/2 apple, cored and roughly chopped

13. Carrot Detox Smoothie

13. Carrot Detox Smoothie

This detox smoothie combines the invigorating and nutritious taste of carrots with the natural sweetness of apple to create a creamy concoction. We use almond milk, but any nondairy milk would work.

With bananas, ginger, and a little lemon juice as the base, this could be a morning smoothie—or a midafternoon pick-me-up. Chia seeds are optional, but I can’t recommend them highly enough.

They’re a powerhouse of nutrition.

Ingredients

1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 banana, peeled and sliced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey (optional)
1/2 cup ice cubes

2. Mix the diced carrots, almond milk, apple, banana, and ginger in a blender.

3. Add the lemon juice and honey to the blender, adjusting the amount of honey as necessary for optimum taste.

4. Blend the mixture at top speed until it is smooth and creamy. If you want a certain consistency, add ice cubes slowly.

5. If you’d like, you can add chia seeds and give a quick blend to mix them in.
