I’m obsessed with these Garlic Butter Honey BBQ Beef Tacos because they hit that messy, saucy, can’t-stop-eating spot I crave on a regular Tuesday. I love how the ground beef turns rich and juicy, then gets wrapped up with that sticky BBQ sauce vibe that clings to every bite.

But the real pull is the balance, sweet, savory, a little bold, totally shameless. And yes, I want the drips on my plate.

The kind I swipe up with the last piece of tortilla. No polite taco behavior here.

Just big flavor, crunchy edges, and me going back for one more.

  • Red onion adds crunch and a sharp little bite.
  • Avocado or guacamole cools things down and adds creamy goodness.
  • Plus, cilantro, lime, and jalapeños keep it fresh, bright, and bold.
  • Sour cream or crema softens the spice and makes it feel complete.

Ingredient Quantities

  • 1 pound ground beef (85 15 lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite bottle sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3/4 to 1 teaspoon kosher salt, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 small flour tortillas or 8 corn tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced or 1/2 cup prepared guacamole
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or Mexican crema (optional)
  • Pickled jalapeños or sliced fresh jalapeño, to taste (optional)

How to Make this

1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. When shimmering, add the ground beef and cook, breaking up, until browned and no longer pink, about 6 to 8 minutes.

2. Push beef to the side, reduce heat to medium, add the butter and minced garlic to the pan. Cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds, then stir garlic and butter into the beef.

3. Stir in the BBQ sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, ground cumin, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer gently 3 to 5 minutes until sauce is warmed and slightly thickened, tasting and adjusting salt and pepper.

4. While the beef simmers, warm the tortillas: stack and wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave 20 to 30 seconds, or warm individually in a dry skillet 20 to 30 seconds per side until pliable.

5. Prepare toppings: shred the cheese, dice the red onion, slice the avocado or portion the guacamole, chop the cilantro, and cut the lime into wedges. Have sour cream or crema and jalapeños ready if using.

6. Assemble tacos by dividing the saucy beef among the tortillas.

7. Sprinkle shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack over the hot beef so it melts slightly.

8. Top with diced red onion, avocado slices or guacamole, chopped cilantro, and pickled or fresh jalapeño to taste.

9. Serve immediately with lime wedges and a dollop of sour cream or Mexican crema if desired.

7. Box grater for the cheese
8. Microwave-safe plate and a damp paper towel or clean kitchen towel for wrapping tortillas

FAQ

Garlic Butter Honey BBQ Beef Tacos Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • Ground beef: ground turkey, ground chicken, crumbled firm tofu or tempeh for vegetarian option, or shredded rotisserie chicken for a lighter texture
  • BBQ sauce: smoky chipotle BBQ for extra heat, hoisin sauce for sweet umami, or a mix of ketchup plus brown sugar and a splash of apple cider vinegar if you need a pantry swap
  • Tortillas: corn tortillas for gluten free, butter lettuce leaves for low carb, small pita pockets for a different handheld, or whole wheat/flour tortillas for a heartier wrap
  • Shredded cheese: Monterey Jack or Colby for mild melting, Pepper Jack for heat, crumbled queso fresco for a tangy finish, or vegan shredded cheese for a dairy free option

Pro Tips

– Brown the beef in a hot pan and resist overcrowding. Give the meat space to sear so you get little browned bits that add deep flavor when you stir in the sauce.

– Finish the garlic in butter off the direct high heat and fold it into the meat quickly. Garlic burns fast and will turn bitter if left in a scorching pan.

– Taste and adjust the sauce before assembling. Depending on your BBQ sauce sweetness and saltiness, you may want a splash more honey, a pinch more salt, or an extra squeeze of lime to brighten the whole mix.

– Warm tortillas until just pliable and keep them covered so they stay soft. A lightly charred tortilla adds texture, but cracking or drying will distract from the saucy beef.

– Layer toppings with contrast in mind: a little raw red onion for snap, creamy avocado or guacamole for richness, and a squeeze of lime to cut through the richness. Add jalapeño sparingly at first so heat doesn’t overwhelm the other flavors.
