I never knew tofu could turn out this crispy, golden, and satisfying with just 4 ingredients. This is the high protein vegan recipe I keep coming back to again and again.

I’m obsessed with this crispy air fried tofu because it gives me that crunchy outside, tender middle situation without any fuss. Extra-firm tofu gets seriously snackable, especially with low-sodium tamari bringing that salty, savory bite I crave.

I love how it feels like takeout energy, but still light, high-protein, and totally vegan. And the texture?

Ridiculously good. I’ll eat it straight from the basket, toss it into bowls, or drag it through whatever sauce I’m currently addicted to.

But honestly, it doesn’t need much. Fast, crispy, gluten-free, oil-free, and wildly satisfying.

My kind of tofu. Every single time.

Ingredients

  • Extra-firm tofu is the protein base, and it actually gets chewy, not mushy.
  • Pressed tofu matters because less water means better browning and way crispier edges.
  • Cornstarch is the crunch helper.

It gives tofu that snacky, golden outside.

  • Arrowroot works too, especially if that’s what’s already hiding in your pantry.
  • Tamari adds salty, savory flavor fast, so the tofu doesn’t taste plain.
  • Soy sauce does the same job, and it’s probably already in your fridge.
  • Garlic powder is optional, but honestly, it makes everything taste more like dinner.
  • Plus, these ingredients keep things simple without making the tofu feel boring.
  • Basically, you’re getting crispy bites that still feel light and pretty healthy.

Ingredient Quantities

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu (14 ounces / about 400 g), pressed and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (or arrowroot powder) for crisping
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium tamari or soy sauce for seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

How to Make this

1. Press the tofu for 15 to 30 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1 inch cubes.

2. Place tofu cubes in a bowl and add 1 tablespoon low sodium tamari or soy sauce and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, tossing gently to coat.

3. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder over the seasoned tofu and toss until every piece is evenly coated.

4. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes.

5. Arrange tofu cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between pieces for airflow.

6. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes.

7. Open the basket, gently shake or flip the tofu, then continue air frying for an additional 4 to 8 minutes until the tofu is golden brown and crisp.

8. Let the tofu rest 2 minutes, then serve with your favorite sauce or enjoy on its own.

Quick And Easy Crispy Air Fried Tofu

This recipe yields crunchy, golden tofu cubes that are perfect tossed into salads, bowls, or served with your favorite dipping sauce. Ready in about 25 minutes.

Ingredients
– 1 block extra-firm tofu (14 ounces / about 400 g), pressed and cut into 1 inch cubes
– 2 tablespoons cornstarch (or arrowroot powder) for crisping
– 1 tablespoon low-sodium tamari or soy sauce for seasoning
– 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
– A light spray of neutral oil for the air fryer basket

Method
1. Press tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1 inch cubes.
2. Toss tofu cubes with tamari or soy sauce until evenly coated. Let sit 2 minutes to absorb.
3. Sprinkle cornstarch and garlic powder over the tofu and toss gently to coat each piece.
4. Arrange tofu in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Lightly spray with oil.
5. Air fry at 390 F (200 C) for 10 to 12 minutes, shaking or flipping halfway, until edges are deeply golden and crisp.
6. Serve immediately with your favorite sauce or add to bowls and salads.

Substitutions

  • Extra-firm tofu: use firm tofu if needed, but press longer for best texture
  • Cornstarch or arrowroot: use potato starch or tapioca starch for similar crisping
  • Tamari or soy sauce: use coconut aminos for a lower sodium and soy free option
  • Garlic powder: substitute 1 small clove fresh minced garlic or 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Pro Tips

1. Press the tofu longer if you can, up to 45 minutes for extra-firm results. The drier the block, the crispier the outside will get and the firmer the interior texture.

2. Coat the tofu in cornstarch right before it goes into the air fryer to keep the dusting light and even. If any pieces clump, gently separate them with your fingers so each cube crisps up individually.

3. Give the basket a quick spray of oil or toss the coated cubes with a teaspoon of neutral oil for deeper color and a more golden crunch, especially if your air fryer runs cool.

4. Let the tofu rest on a wire rack for a couple of minutes after cooking to keep steam from softening the crust. Serve with a warm dipping sauce to balance the savory crispness.
